I’m amazed at how much this word, “NICE” gets used these days. She’s “NICE”. This pizza is “NICE”. Mr. Greene is a “NICE” math teacher. It’s much more of a word that means, “I like it.” or “It pleases me.”. It's interesting how this term always circles back to, “ME”.
What’s really dangerous is when this term gets linked to anything to do with Christianity or following Jesus. Why is this so? This is dangerous from two angles. First, saying, thinking or believing that Jesus was “NICE” is incorrect at best.
If Jesus was nice, he would have pleased (or at least attempted to) everyone.
If Jesus was nice, he would have allowed others to do what they wanted (that’s part of please others).
If Jesus was nice, he would have taught less, told the truth less and certainly done less (or zero) healings on the Sabbath because that made some people mad. If you’re making people mad are you ever going to be accused of being “NICE”?
The danger of “NICE” doesn’t end with wrongly attaching that word and idea to Jesus. Many people also sadly think that Jesus taught and wants Christians to be “NICE”.
If Christians are to be “NICE” then we wouldn’t tell people that Jesus is the only way and only truth, because that’s not “NICE”.
If Christians are to be “NICE” then we wouldn’t be challenged and called to love others (even our enemies) which requires us to have hard conversations, be sacrificial and go well beyond words.
If Christians are to be “NICE” then we wouldn’t call a sin a sin, because that’s not “NICE”.
The word “NICE” has no place in describing Jesus or His followers. If you want to know Jesus, get to know Him in the first four books of the New Testament in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Let me warn you though, He’s not “NICE”.
